One of the tragedies of our time is the misunderstanding of love. To ‘make love’ when checked from your dictionary means to engage in sexual intercourse. And for many people that’s what love is. For many people, love is sex. Could a person be more ‘wronger’ than that?I fear for this generation, because until we understand what love truly is, the rot and canker in society cannot be cured.
Jesus said, ‘I give unto you a new commandment, That ye love one another. As I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. ‘ – John 13:34-35. This is THE LAW OF LOVE which Jesus talked about, and you must understand it as a child of God. This is the new law that must govern the new creation that Jesus was producing. You must understand that love is not sex; love is not chocolate; love is not romance; love is not marriage or relationships. What then is love?
Jesus lived in the era where the Romans were taking over from Greece in world dominance. Andin ancient Greek writings there were several words that described love: Key amongst them were:
Eros (sensual love – often between lovers),
Phileo (friendly affection/brothrely love – found in friendship),
Storge (natural family affection – of parents for children and among siblings),
Agapa (unconditional love)
‘AGAPE’ was hardly found in any of the numerous greek writings until the time of Jesus. So some scholars believe Jesus invented the word. But what I want you to know is that, Man never understood what LOVE really meant until Jesus came to open up AGAPE unto us and showed us what it is. Love to the natural man is sensual and desirous. The best form of love that the natural man can give is selfish and self-seeking at best. When someone tells you ‘I love you’, they are looking at their interest – what pleases them. You have some qualities that they desire, or they stand to gain some advantage from you. That affection they have for you will dissipate into thin air like vapor if you lost those qualities, or no longer provide them that advantage. That’s what man calls love: Our Self-Interest. Are you surprised by how people fall in love and fall out of love by a snap of the finger? Don’t be. The natural man cannot understand what love is without God.
Luke 6:32-34
“But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back.
Jesus explained, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13
Most of what we call love, is not love at all, according to what God calls love. When a gentleman says he loves a lady, most often than not she fits into his definition of beauty. He is probably crazy about the lady’s shape or some attractive features he likes. Is that not selfish? The ladies are not exempted – mostly she is accessing what she stands to benefit by saying yes to that gentleman or the other. Self-Interest. You are not looking at the other person’s interest but yours.No wonder most guys start cheating because he got another lady with better features. Let me ask you this. If that lady got burnt and lost her beauty through some accident, will you still stick with her? Ahaa. Likewise, have we not seen ladies who dump their spouses because he lost his job and no longer has money? Maybe you are better and you won’t do that. But will you stick with that guy if he lost his legs and you have to carry him in a wheel chair everyday? Please don’t say God forbid..Lol.
I am just trying to make you see that when man says love, it’s actually Self-Interest and self-benefit they are talking about. THAT’S NOT LOVE ACCORDING TO GOD’S DEFINITION OF LOVE. To do better, you will need something more from God because True love can only be understood in God and that is what Jesus came to show us. Meditate on that and the Lord will give you understanding.
